A Talented Way to Keep Talent
We are increasingly being asked to develop the talent at middle to senior management in organisations and help develop strategic thinking as a part of their mind set.
Traditional management programmes may not stretch, engage and deeply challenge the skills and mindsets of talent individuals the organisation dearly wants to retain and progress.
Equally the brief is to spot talented people that we see going through the training processes and provide them with opportunities to exhibit creative leadership and team skills.
One of our favoured ways of doing this is to create/utilise those issues that are keeping senior executives awake at night or are issues that challenge the core beliefs and “DNA” of the organisation. Such action learning projects are often not tackled because they are loaded politically or go the very heart of the way the organisation thinks.
These projects enable future leaders to practice what they are learning, draw on real life occurrences in their business and stretch their leadership skills. The primary objective of the projects is to a memorable and successful change initiative, develop leadership, ‘political sensitivity’, networking and team working skills.
When considering setting up Projects as a part of an overall management programme we have found they work best when:
o The projects are strategic in nature and capable and senior management have not got pre conceived ideas of the satisfactory outcome. The projects are also highly visible
o Active senior management involvement and access to their time
o Teams work together and are helped to function effectively in a team environment. The learning is continually checked and thee is continuous clarity of the learning objectives explicit in the project
o Teams negotiate the resources that are required before starting projects and there is organisational agreement that individuals can be released partly or wholly from their normal responsibilities and time is given to this learning process.
o The results are often engaging and have the added value of providing different and creative solutions to issues that have been bedevilling the organisation for some time.
