How to calm your fears when making a Presentation

If the thought of making a presentation makes your palms sweat and your heart race, you’re not alone—and there are practical ways to calm those nerves.

Focus on Your Audience

It’s not about you! Shift your focus away from yourself and toward your audience. Remember, they’re there to learn from you, not to judge you. In fact it’s quite arrogant of you if you think they are, because in fact they are only interested in your contribution not you.

Concentrate on providing value and connecting with your listeners which can make the experience feel less intimidating.

Visualize Success

Take a few moments to picture yourself delivering a successful presentation. Imagine yourself speaking clearly, engaging your audience, and feeling at ease. Visualization helps reframe your nervous energy into a positive, confident mindset.

Control Your Breathing

Before stepping up to speak, inhale deeply through your nose for four seconds, hold for four seconds, and exhale through your mouth for six seconds.  This technique reduces physical symptoms of anxiety, such as a racing heartbeat.

Prepare Thoroughly

Rehearse your presentation multiple times and anticipate potential questions from your audience. Practice in front of friends/family or record yourself to identify areas for improvement. Familiarity with your content will reduce uncertainty and boost your confidence.

Start with a question

Ease into your presentation with a question or a relatable fact i.e. How many people here today know what it’s like to have over £40k worth of student debt?  Or did you know that  all the electricity powering the internet weighs the same as an apricot? Or did you know that a hippo’s jaw opens wide enough to fit a sports car inside? A strong opening helps you build momentum and sets a confident tone for the rest of your talk.

Use Pictures

Pictures paint a thousand words. Remove as many words from your slides as possible. The best presenters will argue that pictures are all that’s needed

By using these techniques, you can transform your fear into focus and deliver your message with confidence. Public speaking is a skill that improves with practice—so embrace the opportunity to grow!
